| Trade and Production in Premonetary Greece: Production and the Craftsman.![]() Editor: Carole GillisContent:This volume is the result of two workshops held in Athens in 1994 and 1995, the first entitled " Aspects of Production" and the second. "The Craftsman and His/ Her Role in the Society". As many of the articles concern both aspects, it was decided to publish the proceedings together, and to group the articles by category rather than by workshop. Thus, there is one article discussing production on a more abstract, definitional level, two concerning the use of written sources and archaeological evidence together, five about pottery, including a modern, ethnographic study of traditional ceramic production in Greece, five regarding various aspects of metals and metallurgy, one discussing molds for the production of gold and glass jewelry, one concerning both olive oil production in antiquity and modern quality taste testing, and the last treating bone material and production. Some common threads run through many of the articles: the question of the relation of religious and metallurgical activities; attempts to define and identify certain elementary terms such as "workshop"; the use and abuse of theoretical models as explanatory tools, the plurality of approach and levels in almost any area discussed and the dangers in generalizing; the internal diversity of the category " craftsman"; and others.
