SPECIAL OFFERSHONOURING THE LATE PROFESSOR HOMER L. THOMAS (1913-2003)Professor Homer L. Thomas died in May 2003. His works on chronology are his main contributions to archaeology. He contributed with articles and the summary of the monumental third edition of Chronologies in Old World Archaeology (1992). He summarized the available radiocarbon and other evidence in his major work Near Eastern, Mediterranean and European Chronology. The Historical, Archaeological, Radiocarbon, Pollen-Analytical and Geochronological Evidence (SIMA XVII:1-2). In A Handbook of Archaeology he tried to follow in the footsteps of his great master Oscar Montelius and others in an attempt at understanding the development and interrelationships of the prehistoric cultures of southwest Asia, the Mediterranean and Trans-Alpine Europe. Four fascicles appeared but he died before completing the work. An obituary appeared in the AHA Newsletter, Number 8, Summer 2003, see http://mulibraries.missouri.edu/admin/HomerThomas.htm. Among his distinctions it may be mentioned that he was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, to whom he donated his library, and a foreign member of the Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, Stockholm.
